Nestled in Vy Da ward, Tuy Lý Residence is one of the most iconic royal residences of the Nguyen Dynasty, preserving ancient architecture and valuable literary heritages of Prince Tuy Lý Vương — famously dubbed “the Prince of Poets”. This national relic is not only a cultural gem but also a tranquil retreat for travelers exploring Hue’s historic landscape.
Overview of Tuy Ly Residence
During the Nguyen Dynasty, many residences for royal family members and mandarins were built in and around Hue Imperial City. Tuy Lý Residence, officially named “Tuy Lý Vương Từ”, belonged to Prince Tuy Lý Vương (Nguyễn Phúc Miên Trinh) — Emperor Minh Mang’s 11th son and a renowned poet.
Built in 1866 on the foundation of his mother’s old cottage, Tuy Lý Residence was designed in the style of a traditional “nha ruong” (Hue wooden house). The highlight is a three-compartment house with double tiled roofs, intricately decorated with ceramic motifs of dragons, unicorns, turtles, and phoenixes.
Inside, the altar of Prince Tuy Lý Vương is preserved alongside over 150 woodblocks of his poetry, valuable relics, and photographs. Two auxiliary houses for ritual preparation once stood here, though only foundations remain. A shrine dedicated to his concubine, Nguyen Thi Luu, also resides within the premises.
More than a royal residence, Tuy Lý Residence holds immense historical, cultural, and literary significance — officially recognized as a National Relic in 1991. Even today, descendants of Tuy Lý Vương continue their passion for poetry and the arts.
