Nestled amidst the serene highlands of Truong An ward, Từ Đàm Pagoda stands as one of Hue’s most respected and historically significant Buddhist temples. Known for its unique “Hội Chùa” architectural style, this sacred site beautifully blends modern and traditional elements, offering a peaceful sanctuary for visitors and devotees alike.
Overview of Tu Dam Pagoda
Established after 1695 by Superior Monk Minh Hoằng Tử Dung, Từ Đàm Pagoda was honored with the title “Sắc Tứ An Tôn” by Lord Nguyễn Phúc Chu in 1703, and later renamed in 1841 under Emperor Thiệu Trị. The pagoda features three main parts: the Three-Door Gate, the Main Hall, and the Hoi Area.

The majestic Three-Door Gate opens to a sacred fig tree gifted by the French Buddhist leader in 1936. The Main Hall includes a forecourt elevated on granite, a central chamber housing a serene Buddha statue on a lotus, and an ancient area at the rear. Unlike many ornate Hue pagodas, Từ Đàm embraces simplicity in its decorations.
As a “Hội Chùa”, it houses a spacious clubhouse with ten rooms and two stories — once a gathering place for Buddhist activities near Phan Boi Chau street.
