Tucked away in a peaceful village of Phu Loc district, Hà Trung Pagoda (officially known as Pho Thanh) is a centuries-old spiritual landmark that preserves rare cultural relics and the legacy of revered monks from Vietnam’s Nguyen Dynasty era.
Overview of Ha Trung Pagoda
Though modest in size, Hà Trung Pagoda holds remarkable historical significance. In 1695, Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu appointed Monk Nguyen Thieu — an eminent figure from Guangdong, China — as its abbot. Before that, Nguyen Thieu was entrusted to return to China and invite the great Venerable Thach Liem to preach Buddhism in Vietnam.
Historical records, notably Hai Ngoai Ky Su, recount Venerable Thach Liem’s visit to Hà Trung Pagoda on his journey from Thiên Mụ Pagoda to Quang Nam province. A treasured highlight of the temple is a 1.33-meter-high stone Guanyin statue brought from China by Monk Nguyen Thieu. Visitors today can also admire two wooden Amitabha statues and a bronze bell cast in 1672 — all testaments to the pagoda’s lasting spiritual heritage.
Recognized as a provincial-level cultural and historic relic in 2006, Hà Trung Pagoda offers a serene, authentic atmosphere for those seeking to immerse themselves in Hue’s religious and cultural history.
