Name
Before Tam Giang had its name, it was known as “Hat Hai” which means “the sea is shallow”, from south to north is just 30 miles and only 6 miles from east to west. From the lower section of O Luu – Tho Lai (Luong Dien river system) to the southwest it has three river mouths: Ta(Left) – Huu(Right) and Trung(Mid) rivers. This were one of the reasons that Minh Mang Emperor changed the name “Tam Giang”.
Economics
This lagoon has favorable conditions for the aquaculture milieu. It has an average water depth of 2 – 4m. However, in some places it is 7m. It is around 35 km long. As it lies between sea and river, Tam Giang Lagoon is a brackish water which is ideal water for both aquaculture and commercial fishing with roughly 300 species of aquatic animals. Tam Giang lagoon system is one of the most important areas for both the economy and the ecosystem in Hue. The high income is achieved through the sale of seafood products such as clams, fish, shrimp, and others. Hue province authorities are researching and looking for investment from overseas and domestic business organizers with the aim of developing and boosting the economy and tourism of this region.
Nowadays, Vietnamese and visitors from abroad will not only know Tam Giang Lagoon for its economic, geography, and historical values but also because of its beauty. It has increasingly become a popular destination for local youngsters where they can enjoy the fresh air and the dramatic light of sunrise and sunset.
