Vietnam is a hidden land with the “S” line that has a lot of breathtaking landscape. Moreover, natural resources are very plentiful such as streams, river systems, mountains, forest sceneries and lagoon systems. Especially, Tam Giang which is one of the biggest lagoons in Southeast Asia and the most beautiful lagoon systems in Central Vietnam.
The Tam Giang Lagoon is situated in the Tam Giang – Cau Hai lagoon system and lies alongside the O Lau and Huong Rivers. It spans around 700km through Thua Thien-Hue via four districts: Phong Dien, Quang Dien, Huong Tra and Phu Vang.
The Tam Giang lagoon, Thuan An beach, and Huong river were the waterways used by the Mandarins of Nguyen dynasty when they went to the capital. Tam Giang lagoon used to be a deep, unpredictable and dangerous open water for seafarers.
Before Tam Giang had its name, it was known as “Hat Hai” which means “the sea is shallow”, from south to north is just 30 miles and only 6 miles from east to west. From lower section O Luu – Tho Lai (Luong Dien river system) to the southwest it has three river mouths: Ta(Left) – Huu(Right) and Trung(Mid) rivers. These were one of the reasons that Minh Mang Emperor changed the name “Tam Giang”.
This lagoon has favorable conditions for aquaculture milieu. It has an average water depth of 2 – 4m. However, in some places it is 7m. It is around 35 km long. As it lies between sea and river, Tam Giang Lagoon is a brackish water which is an ideal water for both aquaculture and commercial fishing with roughly 300 species of aquatic animals. Tam Giang lagoon system is one of the most important areas for both economy and ecosystem in Hue. The high income is achieved through the sale of seafood products such as clam, fish, shrimp, and others. Hue province authorities are researching and looking for investment from oversea and domestic business organizers with the aim of developing and boosting economy and tourism of this region.
Nowadays, Vietnamese and visitors from abroad will not only know Tam Giang lagoon for its economic, geography and history values, but also because of its beauty. It has increasingly become popular destination of local youngsters where they can enjoy fresh air and dramatical light of sunrise and sunset.
