Quốc Ân Pagoda, nestled at the foot of Bàn Mountain near Ngự Bình Mountain in Hue City, represents one of Vietnam’s most significant Buddhist heritage sites. Founded in the late 17th century by Chinese monk Nguyễn Thiều, this temple marks the birthplace of the Lâm Tế Zen sect in Vietnam. With its distinctive architectural style and profound historical significance dating back to the Nguyen Lords era, Quốc Ân Pagoda stands as a living testament to Hue’s rich spiritual history and cultural identity.
Overview of Quoc An Pagoda
Founded in 1689 by Chinese monk Nguyễn Thiều, Quốc Ân Pagoda received its name from Lord Nguyễn Phúc Thái, who granted it tax exemption status. The temple flourished until the Tây Sơn era when it fell into disrepair, before being reconstructed by Princess Ngọc Tư in 1805 and later renovated during the reigns of Emperors Minh Mạng and Thiệu Trị. Monk Nguyễn Thiều, who established the Lâm Tế Zen sect in Vietnam, resided here until his passing in 1728, with his tomb tower standing in nearby Dương Xuân village.
Spanning 5,000m² with 550m² of architectural structures, the pagoda follows traditional “口” design with a southwest-facing three-entrance gate. Notable features include a 1.6m stone stele bearing Monk Nguyễn Thiều’s biography and the royal seal, and numerous antiquities in the main hall, including the “Sắc tứ Quốc Ân Tự” board and Lord Nguyễn Phúc Khoát’s couplets. As Vietnam’s first Lâm Tế meditation temple, Quốc Ân holds immense historical value, continuing to function as both an active Buddhist sanctuary and cultural landmark.
