Cần Chánh Palace stands as the magnificent centerpiece of Hue’s Imperial City, once serving as the emperor’s daily workplace and venue for grand royal receptions. This architectural masterpiece represents the pinnacle of traditional Vietnamese craftsmanship from the 19th century. Despite being devastated by fire in 1947, ongoing restoration efforts continue to revive this historical treasure.
Overview of Can Chanh Palace
Constructed in 1804 during Emperor Gia Long‘s reign, Cần Chánh Palace once stood as the largest and most exquisite wooden structure within Hue’s Imperial City. The palace served as the emperor’s daily workplace, hosting imperial court sessions on the 5th, 10th, 20th, and 25th days of each lunar month. It was also the prestigious venue for diplomatic receptions and royal banquets.
Built upon a nearly one-meter high foundation, this architectural marvel covered an impressive area of approximately 1,000 square meters. The main palace featured five compartments with double wings, while the front palace comprised seven compartments with single wings. The entire structure was supported by 80 ironwood pillars, meticulously carved with intricate designs that showcase the remarkable craftsmanship of 19th-century Vietnamese artisans.
At the heart of the main palace stood the royal throne, flanked by ornate mirror drawings depicting scenic locations and provincial maps of Vietnam. The palace also housed valuable treasures from the Nguyen Dynasty. Throughout its history, Cần Chánh Palace underwent several renovations in 1827, 1850, and 1899, with Emperor Khải Định commissioning a complete repainting in the early 20th century. Tragically, the palace was destroyed by fire in 1947, but restoration efforts continue to this day.
